Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Surendra Kumar won the Gokalpur (SC) seat in the Delhi Assembly elections on Tuesday, defeating BJP’s Ranjeet Singh by 19,488 votes. Fateh Singh of the AAP had won the seat by 31,968 votes in the 2015 Assembly polls. He had defeated Ranjeet Singh. Fateh Singh got 48.71 percent of the votes.
In 2020, Surendra Kumar received 53.22% of the votes cast in the state election, while Ranjeet Singh, SP Singh polled 41.5%, 1.34% votes respectively.
Gokalpur Assembly seat comes under North East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency. On February 8, along with 69 other constituencies, Gokalpur went to poll to select a new government. The terms of present Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government will come to an end in February 22, 2020.
In 2015 assembly elections, Kejriwal-led AAP had won 67 seats in the 70-member assembly, Gokalpur Assembly seat being one of them. In 2015, seven candidates were in the contest for the seat. This year, in 2020, the number is eight.
Arvind Kejriwal led the Aam Aadmi Party to a stupendous victory yet again in the Delhi Assembly polls, dealing a body blow to the main rival BJP and completely decimating the Congress in a keenly-watched battle in the midst of anti-CAA protests.
The 51-year-old bureaucrat-turned-politician almost replicated the AAP's fairy-tale victory of 2015 by riding on his government's development agenda, and in the process emerged as a key leader in the national political landscape.
As AAP was poised to bag 62 out of 70 seats, leaders cutting across party lines including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi (Congress), Sharad Pawar (NCP), Mamata Banerjee (TMC), Naveen Patnaik (BJD) and MK Stalin (DMK) congratulated Kejriwal for the historic victory.
