Delhi Assembly Election Results 2020: The Delhi polls were billed as a triangular fight. But when the results came in, it was clear that the third angle of this fight was completely demolished. Coming at distant second, the BJP also managed to better its 2015 tally. But the biggest loser was the Congress part. The Grand Old Party of India that had ruled Delhi for three consecutive terms failed to open its account in the Assembly polls. The data-crunching shows that only three Congress leaders managed to save their deposits. Congress candidates from Gandhi Nagar, Badli and Kasturba Nagar got enough votes that helped them to save their security deposits.
It should be noted that to save one’s security deposit, a candidate needs to secure one-sixth or 16 per cent of the total number of valid votes cast in the Assembly seat.
In Badli, Assembly seat, Devender Yadav of the Congress party secured 19.66 per cent of votes. Aam Aadmi Party’s Ajesh Yadav won the seat with 69,357 votes. Similarly, Abhishek Dutt manged to get 21.42 per cent vote in Kasturba Nagar Assembly constituency. The seat has been won by Madan Lal with 40.45 per cent votes. He got 37,100 votes.
The third Congress candidate who saved his deposit was senior Congress leader Arvinder Singh Lovely. Lovely got 19.16 per cent of votes while the winning candidate Anil Kumar Bajpai of the BJP got total of 48,467.
Congress's performance touched a record low in the Delhi Assembly election as the party bagged less than 5 per cent of the total votes polled and 63 of its candidates lost their deposits. The party failed to open its account for the second consecutive assembly election in Delhi.
Most of Congress candidates got less than 5 per cent of the total votes polled in their respective constituencies. Delhi Congress chief Shubhash Chopra's daughter Shivani Chopra, who was the party candidate from Kalkaji, also could not save her deposit.
Former Delhi Assembly Speaker Yoganand Shastri's daughter Priyanka Singh also forfeited her deposit. The party's campaign committee chairman Kirti Azad's wife, Poonam Azad, lost badly and stood fourth, polling only 2,604 (2.23) votes.
