Gujarat Assembly Elections 2017: Chief Minister Vijay Rupani wins from Rajkot West

Rajkot:

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Monday retained the Rajkot West seat by defeating Congress candidate Indranil Rajyaguru. Rupani, who was initially trailing after the count of postal ballots, later marched ahead of his Congress rival and defeated him by a margin of 54,300 votes.

Notably, this seat was quite significant for BJP as Narendra Modi had contested from Rajkot West as Gujarat chief minister in 2002. Besides, BJP has been maintaining a lead on this seat for over three decades now. In fact, present Gujarat CM Rupani had won this seat in the 2014 bypoll.

The Election Commission has put out the number for 181 of 182 seats. The BJP is leading on 99 seats and the Congress is on 79 at present.
