Gujarat Bypolls 2019: BJP's Alpesh Thakor Loses From Radhanpur

OBC leader and BJP candidate Alpesh Thakor on Thursday lost the byelection to Radhanpur Assembly seat in Gujarat. Congress' Raghubhai Desai defeated Thakor by over 3,500 votes, an official said. Thakor, who emerged as an OBC leader during the Patel quota agitation and won the Radhanpur seat in the 2017 polls on Congress' ticket, later quit after differences with the state party leadership. The by-election to the seat became necessary after he resigned as an MLA.

He earlier opposed the inclusion of Patidar community in the Other Backward Class (OBC) category for reservation. His close aide Dhavalsinh Jhala, who also switched over to the BJP, also lost the by-election from Bayad Assembly seat.

The October 21 bypoll were held at 51 assembly seats across 17 states and Samastipur Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar. Besides, state Assembly polls are also scheduled to take place on the same day in Maharashtra and Haryana. The counting of votes for all the states is underway. States where assembly bypolls will be held include Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Odisha and Puducherry (one seat each). The other states are Uttar Pradesh (11), Assam (4), Bihar (5), Gujarat (6), Himachal Pradesh (2), Kerala (5), Punjab (4), Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu (two each) and Sikkim (3).
