After submitting his resignation, Devendra Fadnavis changed his Twitter bio to 'caretaker chief minister of Maharashtra'. Fadnavis on Friday evening submitted his resignation to Maharashtra governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari after failing to resolve the impasse on government formation with ally Shiv Sena. The tenuBJPre of the 13 Maharashtra Assembly ends on Saturday evening. Fadnavis was appointed caretaker CM by the governor.
As caretaker chief minister, Fadnavis will not be able to take policy decisions.
On Saturday, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Saturday invited the Bharatiya Janata Party, the single largest party in the state with 105 seats, to form the government by November 11. "The Governor of Maharashtra Shri Bhagat Singh Koshyari today asked the leader of elected members of the single largest party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, Shri Devendra Fadnavis to indicate the willingness and ability of his party to form the government in Maharashtra," the Governor's office said in a statement.
Meanwhile, caretaker chief minister Devendra Fadnavis met the Maharashtra Governor at Raj Bhavan and apprised him about the steps being taken to maintain ‘law and order’ in the state in the wake of the Supreme Court verdict on the Ayodhya issue.
“CM Devendra Fadnavis briefed Hon Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on the law and order situation and steps taken in view of the Ayodhya verdict,” reads a tweet posted by the Chief Minister’s Office.
Fadnavis resigned as chief minister on Friday after blaming the ally Shiv Sena for rebuffing all attempts to form alliance government after the polls.
The BJP and the Sena are locked in a logjam over sharing of power, which resulted into both the parties failing to form a government even 15 days after the assembly poll verdict which handed them majority in the 288-member Assembly.
On Saturday, Mumbai Police clamped section 144 of CrPC in the wake of the apex court judgement.
