New Delhi:

Hours after Umrila Matondkar's resignation from the party, citing petty in-house politics as reason, senior Congress leader and former Mumbai Congress chief Milind Deora on Tuesday came out in her support, saying that Mumbai North leaders must be held accountable.

"After Urmila Matondkar decided to fight LS elections from Mumbai North, I supported her campaign wholeheartedly as Mumbai Congress President. I stood by her when she was let down by those who brought her into the party. Fully agree that Mumbai North leaders MUST be held accountable!" Deora said.

Earlier in the day, Matondkar resigned from the Congress party, which she had joined barely five months ago. Urmila was the Congress candidate from Mumbai North seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. She had lost to BJP veteran Gopal Shetty.

In a statement, Urmila said: "I have resigned from the Indian National Congress. First thought of resignation came to me when after my repeated efforts, no action was taken in pursuance of my letter dated 16th May, addressed to then Mumbai Congress President Mr. Milind Deora."

Urmila said that rather than taking any action, her letter, which contarined privileged and confidential communication, was leaked to the media. She said that some of the people named in the letter, who she held responsible for her defeat from Mumbai North seat, were awarded with newer positions instead of holding them responsible.

"....some of the persons specifically named in my letter for the shoddy performance of INC in MUMBAI North were rewarded with newer positions instead of holding them accountable for their acts and omissions," she added.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Umrila had written to Deora after her defeat from Mumbai North in LS Polls.
  • She held several party leaders responsible for her Lok Sabha polls defeat.
  • Deora allegedly didn't take any action on leaders Urmila had named in her letter.
