The ruling Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Tuesday said that names of candidates for the state assembly election, to be held on November 28, would be announced on Thursday.
Sports Minister and member of the MPCC nomination committee Zodintluanga said that the names of the candidates would soon be finalised and announced on Thursday (October 11).
According to an official report, names of the Congress candidates for the upcoming poll would be made public by AICC general secretary in charge of North-East Luizinho Faleiro.
In August, Navelim Congress MLA was appointed the All India Congress Committee general secretary in charge of North-East (excluding Assam) by party chief Rahul Gandhi.
Presently, Mizoram is the only Congress-ruled state in the northeast region and hence it would be important to see whether the party manage to return for the third consecutive terms or not.
Meanwhile, according to reports, the recent resignation of two of the senior party leaders would be a major setback for the ruling government and cracks have already begun to appear in its ranks and file.
Sources in the ruling party said that massive tussle has been going inside the party over the selection of candidates in the election to the 40-member state legislature.
Moreover, the party top leadership wanted to ax some senior legislators on grounds of age factor or those did not chance to win, it said.
Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla and its party are expected to face a tough challenge from the Mizo National Front (MNF) in the upcoming State Assembly election. Mizoram goes to poll on November 28 this year along with Madhya Pradesh.
