Major parties contesting Mizoram Assembly elections 2018

New Delhi:

Major political parties in Mizoram are all set for the ensuing state assembly elections to be held on November 28. The ruling Congress party led by Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla is confident of winning the 40-members seat assembly elections and retain power for the third term. However, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may pose a strong challenge to the Congress as the latter is gearing up to take on the former in the state that has the highest concentration of tribals.

Key political parties contesting the Mizoram Assembly elections 2018:

Congress:

The Congress party in Mizoram is led by Chief Minister Lal Thanhawala as the president of the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee. The party is contesting all the 40 seats in the upcoming polls. So far, the party has released names of 36 candidates, of which 12 are first timers.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP):

The BJP, which is a new ruling party in Assam, Tripura, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, and supports coalition governments in Meghalaya and Nagaland, is eyeing Mizoram to make its mission of a Congress-mukt Northeast India a reality. Mizoram state unit BJP president JV Hluna said the party will contest 13 of the 40 assembly seats in the Christian-dominated state.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP):

The Sharad Pawar-led NCP party announced that it would contest five seats out of the 40 Assembly members on November 28 Mizoram Assembly elections. “The party will contest from five seats, including Hachhek, Dampa, Mamit, Aizawl East-I and Aizawl West-I Assembly constituencies,” said NCP Mizoram state unit president Lalawmpuia Chhangte.

Mizo National Front (MNF):

Party president Zoramthanga on October 22 announced the names of 39 candidates, of which 17 are first timers, for November 28 Mizoram Assembly polls. The MNF party also declared that it would contest all the 40 seats for the ensuing election to the state legislature.

Other parties vying for the ensuing Mizoram Assembly elections includes the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP), the Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC), the All India Trinamol Congress, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the CPI (M).

The Congress, which now has its government only in Mizoram in the entire Northeast, faces a major challenge to hold its fort in the state elections on November 28.
