Mahindra unveils XUV300 in compact SUV segment, electric version to launch in 2020

Mahindra has unveiled another compact crossover SUV in the Indian market, XUV300, which is designed around the Ssangyong Tivoli. The XUV300 is expected to launch in February 2019 in petrol and diesel variants and later in complete electric option in 2020. The car was given a code name S201 and it still hold on to a muscular stature with integrated headlamps and the foglamps forms a cheetah-like tear-duct.

Dr Pawan Goenka, Managing Director of Mahindra and Mahindra said that the Mahindra XUV300 will be one of the early models in the company’s line-up of cars to adopt all new high-power all-electric powerstrains which are currently under development. He also stated that the XUV300 electric will have two variants of powerstrain, one focused on practical commuting experience while the other, a high power variant focused on being an object of desire.

Mahindra has collaborated with South Korea’s LG Chem for the supply of Li-on batteries along with Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) configuration which offers high energy density.

The specification of the SUV is still unknown but it is expected that XUV300 will sport a 1.2 litre turbocharged petrol engine which can produce 121 PS of power and 300 Nm of torque. It is also expected to be mated with 6-speed manual transmission. The company is also planning to launch automatic transmission version later for the higher end variants.

Other specification which is expected to be sported by XUV300 includes electronic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, touchscreen infotainment system, disc brakes on all wheels, 17-inch wheels, LED projectors headlamps and seven airbags.

The direct competitor for Mahindra XUV300 will be Hyundai Kona Electric and is also expected to be much cheaper than its rival because of local manufacturing.

Earlier, Mahindra introduced the Alturas G4 SUV, which is based on the SsangYong Rexton G4. However, the Alturas G4 is just a rebadged version of its SsangYong counterpart and is almost the same model in many aspects.

However, price of XUV300 is still not revealed but if the company keeps its price around Rs 6 lakh then it is expected to give tough competition to its competitors.
