BMW Motorrad, the premium motorcycle arm of German luxury car maker BMW Group, has finally launched the new-generation S 1000 RR superbike in India. The prices for BMW S 1000 RR starts at Rs 18.50 Lakh and goes up to Rs 22.95 Lakh (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi).

It is to be noted that the S 1000 RR was first launched in the year 2009. However, the updated S 1000 RR gets new body work and a new engine as well. It gets a redesigned chassis with lighter components, with a trellis sub-frame. The automaker will also offer an optional 'M' electronics package, in addition to two more distinct packages - Select and Race, which allows even further customisation of the electronics suite. The company will further offer an additional three 'Pro' modes which has features like launch control, pit-lane speed limiter.

On the powertrain front, the updated S 1000 RR gets 998 cc, in-line four-cylinder engine which produces 204 bhp at 13,500 rpm and a peak torque of 113 Nm at 10,500 rpm. The engine now gets a BMW's ShiftCam technology, which is essentially variable valve timing for a wider spread of torque across the rev range, with 100 Nm of torque from as low as 5,500 rpm. It is mated to a 6-speed gearbox with an up/down quickshifter and is also equipped with an updated electronics suite.

Interestingly, the engine of new S 1000 RR is 4 kg lighter than the old one and even the new exhaust is 1.3 kg lighter than on the old model. In fact, the new model weighs 197 kg, which is 11 kg lighter than the old BMW S 1000 RR.

On the safety front, the new S 1000 RR is equipped with a 6-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) that includes ABS, Dynamic Traction Control, wheelie control, rear-wheel lift mitigation, throttle response and also electronic suspension adjustment in the Select Package. Lastly, the new-generation BMW S 1000 RR gets a 6.5-inch TFT instrument console and Bluetooth connectivity.

On the competition front, the new BMW S 1000 RR goes up against the Ducati Panigale V4, Kawasaki ZX-10RR and the Suzuki GSX-R1000 in India.
