New Delhi:

Known for her excellent surgical competency, Dr. Leena Jain, a leading plastic surgeon in Mumbai, performed a limb-saving surgery on a 35-year-old male patient who suffered from a life-altering degloving injury.

The male patient had an unfortunate accident while traveling in an auto-rickshaw, which resulted in soft tissue loss of his left forearm, especially from the wrist to the elbow, circumferentially. Hospitalized elsewhere for primary care but he was advised amputation of the upper limb above elbow level considering the severity of the degloving injury. However, the patient and his family sought a second opinion from Dr. Leena Jain, a noted Plastic and Microsurgeon associated with Lilavati Hospital, Bandra, Mumbai.

According to Mrs. Vishaka Goyal, the co-founder of ClinicSpots (a doctor discovery platform), Dr. Leena Jain is considered to be one of the best plastic surgeons in Mumbai with expertise in microsurgery. She has successfully performed difficult plastic surgeries, reconstructive surgeries, and so on to give a new lease of life to patients with debilitating injuries and wounds.

Dr. Leena Jain reassured the patient of the best possible recovery outcomes. She outlined a comprehensive treatment plan that included debridement under anesthesia. An in-depth examination revealed exposed forearm bones and tendons and a damaged radial artery. The skin envelope from the elbow to the wrist was completely absent and all structures were bare.

However, all three nerves were uninjured. In addition, he was diagnosed with diabetes, which had to be treated and brought under control before the beginning of treatment.

Once his diabetes was under control, Dr. Leena Jain and her team began the treatment in a phased manner. The first surgery involved transferring a 43 cm x 13 cm flap from the patient's thigh to cover the forearm nearly completely. The residual area was treated with a skin graft. The patient’s forearm covered with flap and graft took nearly two weeks to completely heal, proving the surgical competency of Dr. Leena Jain.

In the following weeks, the patient recovered well. He regained his elbow, wrist, and finger movements. The salvaged limb was healed and displayed aesthetic appeal. It looked like a normal limb with progressive improvement in function.

Dr. Jain elaborated on the role of reconstructive surgeries, skin flaps and skin grafts in treating degloving injuries. Degloving injuries refer to ripping away a large section of the skin with soft tissue layer underneath it, from the muscles and connective tissues. The treatment involves covering and resurfacing the degloved area with a flap followed by reconstruction of the underlying tendons and nerves as needed.
