New Delhi:

If you are facing difficulties in things like opening a new bank account or updating KYC (Know Your Customer) information due to address mismatch in Aadhaar, there is some good news for you. The government has allowed the use of current address in place of the one used for completing the KYC of the individual for such facilities. This move is expected to ease things for workers who are living in some other city than their native place.

The notification issued on Wednesday amending the Prevention of Money-laundering (Maintenance of Records) Rules of 2005 said that a self declaration of the current address to a reporting entity would be sufficient while using Aadhaar as identification.

The decision will help migrant workers who have address of their native place in Aadhaar but wants a bank account with their current address where they are living for work. It will also help them in getting a new mobile connection and bank account.  The decision will also make the process much simpler for those seeking to change address on their Aadhaar.

If a person with Aadhaar number for identification wants to provide address different from what is available in the Central Identities Data Repository, he may give a self-declaration to that effect to the reporting entity.

According to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), as of now, there are 44 documents which you can submit for updating your address in the Aadhaar card. Some of the acceptable supporting documents for address verification include passport, bank passbook, bank statement, voter id, post office passbook, electricity bill (not older than 3 months), water bill ( not older than 3 months), gas connection bill ( not more than 3 months), vehicle registration certificate, marriage certificate and school leaving certificate among others.

Updating address on your Aadhaar card

Offline: The address on your Aadhaar card can also be updated by visiting your nearest Aadhaar centre. You need to carry valid and original documents for updation at these centres. Original documents will be scanned and handed back to you.
