SIMI activist awarded 10 years' rigorous imprisonment for killing cop

New Delhi:

A Bhopal court on Friday awarded 10 years of rigorous imprisonment to Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) activist Farhat for an attack on a police team in Madhya Pradesh's Ratlam district in 2011.

Farhat was convicted under section 307 of the IPC (attempt to murder) and under the Arms Act. Additional District Judge Girish Dixit also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on him.

Farhat and another SIMI activist Zakir were arrested during a police raid in Ratlam on June 3, 2011, for allegedly murdering a police constable.When the police team asked the two to come out, Farhat and and Zakir opened fire, killing policeman Shivprasad and injuring another.

After that Farhat fled from the spot, while a police team led by additional superintendent of police Rajesh Vyas chased him, he opened fire again and a bullet narrowly missed Vyas, the prosecution said.

Eventually, Farhat was nabbed, while Zakir, who had escaped, was shot dead in an encounter later. Farhat was not charged in Shivprasad's murder case.
