Haryana CM Khattar calls thrashing of elderly woman by daughter-in-law 'unacceptable', accused arrested

After a video showing an elderly woman being brutally thrashed by her daughter-in-law in Haryana’s Mahendragarh district, surfaced, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar condemned the incident and called it “deplorable” and “unacceptable”.

The entire incident was caught on camera by the elderly woman's grand daughter and the video has gone viral on social media. "This is deplorable and condemnable, such behavior should not be tolerated in civilised society," CM Khattar tweeted along with the video of the incident. 

Amid the backlash over the video and users questioning the law and order in the state, CM Khattar apprised the public that a case has been registered and the accused has been arrested. The police said,"We are taking her for medical examination after that we'll take her wherever she wants to go."

In the video, the victim identified as Chand Bai is seen sitting on a cot while her daughter-in-law Kanta Devi pushes her forcefully and pulls her hair.

“She (accused) could not take care of the old woman and considered her to be a burden. That is why she assaulted her,” Narnaul Superintendent of Police Chander Mohan said over phone on Saturday. 

A widow, Chand Bai’s husband was an Assistant Sub Inspector in the Border Security Force. She gets pension from the government, police said. 

Kanta Devi was arrested on Saturday morning and has been charged with section 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the IPC, the SP said.
