Burari Deaths: ‘Aasman hilega, dharti kaanpegi....’ diary reveals one man’s delusion

A day after the mysterious death of Burari’s Bhatia family, handwritten notes recovered by the police from their house has revealed that one of the family members had been hallucinating about his father who died 10 years ago.

On Sunday, 11 members of the Bhatia family – 77-year-old Narayan Devi, her son Lalit and Bhavnesh their families and children including two 15-year-old boys; Narayan Devi's daughter and granddaughter Priyanka, were found dead inside their house.

While Narayani Devi was found lying in the house, 10 others were found hanging with their eyes and mouth wrapped and hands tied behind their back.

The police claimed that the delusions of Narayani Devi’s youngest son Lalit Bhatia drove the “mass suicide”. Lalit, who had taken a vow of silence and started speaking recently had told the family that his father, Gopaldas, had possessed him.

Lalit thought that his father was giving him directions to live a better life. One fo the entry in the diary read that his father had told him about an impending apocalypse. It was also revealed in the diary that Lalit thought his father’s soul would save him and others.

"Antim samay mein, aakhri ichha ki purti ke waqt, aasman hilegi dharti kaanpigi, us waqt tum ghabrana mat, mantra ka jaap badha dena, mein aakar utar loonga aur ko bhi utarne mein madad karunga (In your last hours, while your last wish is fulfilled, the sky will open up and the earth will shake, don't panic but start chanting the mantra louder. I will come to save you and others),” the diary read.
