Delhi Weather: Heavy rainfall, thunderstorm and hailstorm lash city, traffic affected

New Delhi:

Heavy rainfall, thunderstorm and hailstorm lashed the national capital Delhi and NCR around 4.40 pm, taking the residents by surprise and disrupting traffic movement across the city. The mercury level fell amid the heavy downpour which brough respite to the people from the sunny weather in the day.

Delhi woke up to a sunny day in the morning and the day saw mainly clear blue skies. The maximum temperature hovered around 35 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature recorded around 23 degrees Celsius, according to the Indian Meterological Department (IMD). The relative humidity oscillated between 40 per cent to 85 per cent in the day, as per the the IMD.

According to the weatherman, the coming days are likely to stay warm and the temperatures expected to rise by a couple of degrees. Dry winds from Northwest direction had reduced the humidity and the sky condition was clear.

This monsoon, the national capital recieved 19 per cent excess rainfall, the IMD said. The last time monsoon withdrew this early from the city was on September 30, 2015, it said.

“Monsoon withdrew from Delhi. The last rain was received on September 24. We are now in the transition phase before winter sets in,” BP Yadav, deputy director general of the IMD, told PTI.

Monsoon had hit Delhi a day ahead of its scheduled date of arrival this year on June 28.

According to the IMD, the minimum temperature in Delhi on Wednesday settled at 22.5 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature was recorded at 36 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity oscillated between 43 per cent to 78 per cent, the IMD stated.
