A 40-year-old man was allegedly shot dead in front of his 5-year-old son in Delhi’s New Usmanpur area on Sunday night. According to news agency ANI, the victim has been identified Akibuddin, who was working with the Delhi Transport Corporation. The incident took place at around 11:45 pm on Sunday. The police have launched an investigation and suspect personal enmity to be the reason behind the gruesome murder.Â

Speaking to ANI, Akibuddin’s sister Rehmat said, “As soon as we reached home, the five men were standing outside our home waiting for us. Upon seeing my brother, they started shooting at him. The mother of the assailants was also present.†The accused pumped several bullets in Akibuddin’s chest in front of his mother. In an unrelated incident, a businessman was stabbed by the unidentified attackers in busy Lajpat Nagar area last week. In this case, the victim identified as one Kailash, was on his way to the local market to buy vegetables when his was stabbed by some robbers. The police have launched a probe and are also scanning the CCTV footage from the area.
The crime graph of the National capital has shown an upward trend. According to an official report released last year, the motor vehicle thefts continued to be the area of concern. There was a rapid increase noted in the number of cases reported last year as compared to 2017. Last year, 44,158 motor vehicle theft cases were reported as against 39,084 cases in 2017.
Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik told the agency that some of the important factors impacting crimes in Delhi are the high influx of migrant population. The pressures of leading a megacity life that leads to impulsive behaviour, disparities in income and proximity in the location of colonies of the affluent and the under-privileged, he added.
Police said heinous crimes last year declined by 11.72 per cent, while major heads like dacoity, attempt to murder, robbery, rapes and riots saw a decline of 36.11, 16.26, 20.15, 0.78 and riot by 54 per cent respectively as compared to the previous year. Even the incidents of snatching and burglary have come down.
