Delhi: Malviya Nagar godown fire rages on, Air Force called in to douse flames

New Delhi:

A massive fire that broke out in a rubber godown in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area on Tuesday evening, was put on after 19 hours of extensive fire fighting operation. The fire was extinguished with the help of Air Force.

The Air Force had deployed a Mi-17 helicopter from its Palam airbase to douse the fire. Earlier, a dense plume of smoke billowed from a burning truck and the godown was seen in the skies over Khirki Extension area.

"Have launched a Mi-17 helicopter for Bambi operations from Palam to try and contain fire at Malviya Nagar godown," the Air Force said in a statement.

The police evacuated the area to ensure the safety of the people living near the area. So far, no casualty was reported in the fire.

Meanwhile, a political blame game has started over the incident and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj alleged that despite several complaints from the local AAP leaders, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (BJP), which is in the folds of BJP, didn’t take any action against the illegal godowns and factories in the area.
