New Delhi:

After a delay of almost three years, much awaited Rao Tula Ram (RTR) flyover is expected to be thrown open for commuters by June 15, reports Times Of India. According to the report, only 5 per cent of the total is needed to be completed.

"Only a single span needs to be cast, after which tests will be carried out on flyover for a few days before people can use it," the report stated.

There are 77 portals in the 2.7 km three-lane flyover which starts near Munirka petrol pump and ends near the Army hospital at Subroto Park. The report states that the flyover, once completed, will benefit around two lakh commuters daily.

The construction work of the flyover began in November 2014 and the completion deadline was set for 2016. But the deadline got delayed several times because of several technical, financial and environmental factors.

"We needed to chop down 500 trees for building the flyover, among the highest number felled for any project in Delhi. That is why getting permission for their chopping took such a very long time," an official was quoted as saying by the report.

Earlier in 2014, the Delhi High Court questioned the Public Works Department's (PWD) decision to construct a single-lane flyover on Rao Tula Ram (RTR) marg on the Outer Ring Road saying "we all have been victims of that road".

The court's observation came while hearing a plea by various associations representing the residents of Vasant Vihar who had opposed PWD's decision to build a three-lane flyover parallel to the one already there at an estimated cost of Rs 211 crore.
