The Delhi Police said Mohammed Shahrukh, arrested on Tuesday for firing bullets during the communal violence in the northeast district, fired three rounds. “We're trying to recover the pistol he used. Shahrukh said he fired during protests in a fit of rage. He has no criminal background but his father has a narcotics and fake currency case against him. Further investigation underway,” said Ajit Kumar Singla, Additional Commissioner of Police.
Shahrukh, a resident of Karawal Nagar in Northeast Delhi, was arrested by the Crime Branch from Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli. During the protest on February 24, the image of Shahrukh in a red t-shirt pointing a gun at a cop in Jaffrabad, the epicentre of violence, had gone viral on social media and TV news channels. He had also fired multiple shots in front of a police official before running away.
“Shahrukh has been charged under section 307 (attempt to murder), 186, and 353 of IPC and Arms Act. Further sections will be added during the course of investigation if needed. We will try to get his maximum possible remand,” Singla said.

Shahrukh was seen brandishing a gun in Maujpur area threatening to shoot Delhi Head Constable Deepak Dahiya from point-blank range. However, the policeman remained calm, stood his ground and forced Shahrukh to back down. Dahiya, who got a lot of praise for his brave actions, said the safety of the public was the only thing on his mind when he confronted the Shahrukh and even dared him to take a shot at him.
While speaking to news agency ANI, Dahiya said his parents got scared when they saw the pistol was pointed at him by Shahrukh. But they understand it’s his job they are proud of him.
Earlier, it was reported that Delhi Police had managed to arrest Shahrukh within days after he was caught on camera waving a gun at the Delhi Police officer. However, the police later said he was absconding. Now the police have confirmed that Shahrukh has finally been arrested. The communal violence over the amended citizenship law in Delhi has claimed at least 47 lives.
