New Delhi:

The Delhi Metro Rail Network is soon going to have its first dumbbell-shaped metro station. Initially planned in a rectangular shape, the upcoming Najafgarh metro station will be constructed in a dumbbell shape. According to reports, lack of space forced the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to change the shape from regular-rectangular to dumbbell. Najafgarh, which is one of the three upcoming stations on the Delhi Metro’s Grey Line, will be operational in October.

As the work started on ground, the agency could not acquire the private land needed for the regular rectangle shape. However, the engineers have not compromised with the area required for passenger’s movement. Rather, the length of Najafgarh station is 288 metres as against the average metro station length of 200 metres, reports Hindustan Times.

Although, the area of the metro shrinks by a few metres in the middle, the platform length at Najafgarh is nearly 195 metres, way ahead of average 140 metres.

The Grey Line which has three stations—Dwarka, Nangli and Najafgarh- will connect the rural pockets of the city with Dwarka.

“All adjustments have been made in the operational area, where our offices and operational rooms are located. The space one enters after swiping the ticket and the area before that is also bigger than the space at other stations” HT quotes a DMRC official as saying.

The Delhi Metro network stretches up to about 373 Km with 271 stations. The network finds its presence in Delhi-NCR regions with its services extending to Noida and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, to Gurugram, Faridabad, Bahadurgarh and Ballabhgarh in Haryana.
