New Delhi:

People in Ghaziabad who have a pet dog or are planning to own one will have to pay Rs 5,000 to keep their pet. Municipal Corporation passed proposals on Friday to increase the registration fee from Rs 10 to Rs 5,000. Mayor Asha Sharma confirmed that people will now have to play Rs 5,000 to register their pets. This is the first increase in the registeration fee since 1999.

"Acting on complaints filed to control the menace of dogs and promote cleanliness in the area, we have decided to keep the licence fees for owning a dog at Rs 5,000. If a dog is found defecating in parks, a fine of Rs 500 will be imposed on owner," she said.

Dog-owners will also have to pay if their pets are caught defecating in open. A fine of Rs 500 should be imposed on those who allow their pet dogs to defecate in the open.

The corporation would conduct a survey on the number of dogs in the district. At present, it is estimated that there are 80,000 pet dogs in the area that comes under the purview of the corporation.

Delhi and Gurugram have already notified rules regarding pet ownership. The annual registration fee is Rs 500 in both Delhi and Gurugram.
