Sheila Dikshit last rites: Congress' 'daughter' cremated with full state honours in Delhi

Three-time Delhi chief minister and veteran Congress leader Sheila Dikshit, whose contribution to transforming the national capital is acknowledged by leaders cutting across the party lines, passed away on Saturday following cardiac arrest. She was 81. She breathed her last at 3.55 pm at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, doctors said. Her body has been kept at her Nizamuddin East residence where politicians visited to pay their last respects.

She will be accorded a state funeral today. Her last rites will take place at Nigambodh Ghat at 2:30 pm. The Delhi government has declared a two-day mourning in the national capital as a mark of respect for the former chief minister.

12:55 pm: Sonia Gandhi, who spent around five minutes at Sheila Dikshit's residence, met the deceased's sister Rama Dikshit and expressed her condolences.
