A woman died after she jumped before Gomti Express at New Delhi Railway Station on Monday. The incident took place at the platform number 4. Details about the victims are being ascertained by the police. Earlier in morning, another woman had committed suicide at Delhi Metro’s Jhandewalan Station. Delhi Metro had earlier tweeted about the service disruption in morning. “Blue Line Update Delay in services between Indraprastha and Kirti Nagar due to a passenger on track at Jhandewalan. Normal service on all other lines,” the official Twitter handle of Delhi metro posted on micro-blogging site. Last month also, a 25-year-old married woman allegedly killed herself by jumping in front of a metro train at a Yellow Line station.
According to the data published by the WHO, nearly 8,00,000 people die due to suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds globally. 79 per cent of suicides occurred in low and middle-income countries in 2016. Suicide accounted for 1.4 per cent of all deaths worldwide, making it the 18th leading cause of death in 2016.
India now accounts for over a third of the world’s annual female suicides and nearly a fourth of male suicides, a significant increase in its global share from 1990.
India accounted for 37 per cent of global suicide deaths among women and 24 per cent among men in 2016, according to a study. The Global Burden of Disease Study 1990-2016 published in the Lancet Public Health journal said 63 per cent of all suicide deaths reported in India were in the 15-39 age group.
The study found wide variations in suicide death rate across states in India.
Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal and Tripura had high suicide death rates for both men and women, in addition to Kerala and Chhattisgarh which had high suicide death rates for men. The suicide death rate for women in India is 15 per one lakh women, double that of the global suicide rate for women in 2016, which is 7 per one lakh women. Married women account for the high proportion of suicide deaths in India, the study stated.
There is an urgent need for a national suicide prevention strategy, that is data-driven, gender-specific and takes the state variations into account.
