New Delhi:

A professor from prestigious Jadavpur University in Kolkata sparked a controversy with his sexist and misogynistic Facebook post. In the post, which has now been deleted, Kanak Sarkar likened the virgin girls as ‘sealed bottle or packet’. In the post titled “Virgin Bride – Why Not? (Value Oriented Social Counselling for Educated Youth),” Sarkar wrote, “many boys remain fool. They are not aware of virgin girl as wife. Virgin girl is like sealed bottle or sealed packet. Are you willing to buy broken seal while purchasing a bottle of cold drinks or a packet of biscuit?”

The post, which was written on Sunday, soon became viral with many slamming Sarkar for his sexist remarks. Though after all the angry reactions, Sarkar did delete the post, but he defended his viewpoint in another late night post. He said that he writes his personal opinion and that he has not written against any person. He said that his post was part of his research. “I am doing social research and writing for the good and wellbeing of Society,” Sarkar wrote. “It's everybody's right to express his / her thoughts. I have given many posts for and in favour of women. Can verify them in my Timeline,” Sarkar wrote.

Later, another teacher assured action against Sarkar. Assistant Professor Subhajit Naskar assured that, “As a faculty member of Jadavpur University... I will take this up and will do everything possible to ensure that justice is served.”

This is not the first time that Sarkar has written something like this. In November last year, the professor had written about ‘importance of virginity.’ In a Facebook post from November 9, Sarkar had said that boys and girls these days think that celibacy and virginity are not part of ethics and morality. This is the reason that girls end up being "exploited by the cunning boys", Sarkar had said.

Attaching value to virginity, Sarkar emphasised that virginity is as precious as honesty and morality.
