Bangalore:

Faced with an acute shortage of faculty, Karnataka government has decided to recruit 12,000 guest teachers in various primary, high schools and junior colleges, Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education Kimmane Ratnakar said.

An order would be issued in a few days to commence the recruitment process, he told reporters in Bangalore.

The Finance Department has accepted his department’s proposal to recruit them on different pay-scales.

Monthly pay-scale has been fixed at Rs 5,000, Rs 6000 and Rs 7,200, respectively, for primary, high school and junior college teachers, the Minister said.

The department has put on hold permanent recruitment of 4,000 teachers till President Pranab Mukherjee promulgates an ordinance to provide for a special status to the Hyderabad Karnataka region under Article 371 (J) of the Constitution by the Centre, he said.

Meanwhile, following the Centre’s objections to invite tenders for procuring and distributing two sets of uniforms for school children under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in the State, Ratnakar said the department was contemplating to hand over the assignment to betterment committee of each school.

Officials of the Union Human Resource Development Ministry have raised objections to the state government’s decision to invite such tenders every year, he said.

As per SSA norms, betterment committee of each school is authorised to procure and distribute uniforms. The department would discuss pros and cons on the functioning of betterment committees before giving them the task, Ratnakar added.
