Kolkata :

As the opposition parties claimed sporadic violence in today’s by-elections to one Lok Sabha and another Assembly constituency, the ruling Trinamool Congress said they remained ‘peaceful’.

“The polls have been peaceful. People have voted freely and fairly,” TMC Secretary-General Partha Chatterjee said, adding the opposition parties were “crying foul because they don’t enjoy mass support”.

“The opposition has realised TMC will win. So they are making false claims. We thank the voters for their enthusiasm,” he said.

Around 80 per cent voter turnout was recorded in Bongaon (SC) Lok Sabha and Krishnaganj (SC) Assembly seats in West Bengal.

The opposition Left and the BJP said that violent incidents marked polling in Kalyani and Gayeshpur areas of Nadia during the polls.

“The polls have been more and less peaceful but there has been violence in Gayeshpur and Kalyani. We will lodge a complaint with the Election commission about the Observer Ajay Singh Gangowar and IC of Kalyani police station Tushar Kanti Kar. They have worked on behalf of TMC,” BJP state President Rahul Sinha said.

Sinha said that he is hopeful about the victory of BJP candidates in both the seats.

“There has been rampant violence in Gayeshpur and Kalyani area and the ruling TMC has not allowed free and fair elections in the area,” CPI(M) leader Rabin Deb said.
