Passengers travelling by state buses will no longer have to pay for their tickets in cash from March 15, the West Bengal transport minister Suvendu Adhikari said in the assembly on Monday. 

"We are launching smart cards for customers to stop pilferage of revenue," transport minister Suvendu Adhikari said in the house while replying to questions put up by the opposition. 

Later, he told reporters that along with smart card launch, an app called 'Patha Disha' will also be launched for live tracking of buses. Both products will be launched on March 15, he said. 

The World Bank and the Korean government had supported both the projects with grants, transport secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay said. 

All government buses will be available in the live tracking app said Adhikari, adding, that the government will encourage private buses to share their data and be part of the system. Once the smart card is issued to travellers, they will be able to swipe the card with the machine available with the bus conductor the minister said, adding that the process is aimed at increasing revenue by curbing pilferage. 

Adhikari said, till January 2017 this fiscal, the revenue was Rs 1527 crore against Rs 1765 crore revenue in 2015-16. The minister also informed that from April this year, a operson will get a driving licence under CCTV survelliance and the footage will be archived for future reference in case of any accidents.
