New Delhi:

A police inspector and a local resident died during a clash between villagers and cops in western Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr district after carcasses of 25 cows were found on Monday, said the police. Additional Director General of Meerut zone Prashant Kumar said a mob pelted the police with stones and indulged in arson setting several vehicles and the Chingarwathi Police Chowki on fire. The inspector has been identified as Subodh Kumar Singh.

Additional Director General (law and order) Anand Kumar, while holding a press conference, said people had complained that cattle carcass was found in a field. Despite giving assurance to the villagers, they carried the carcass on a tractor and blocked the main road. Later, the protest turned violent when the villagers started pelting stones on the police. The forces retaliated with lathi charge to bring the situation under control.

As tension prevailed in the area, policemen from several police stations have been rushed along with senior officials to take control of the situation, the police said.

Anand Kumar added that the policeman died in stone pelting from villagers, and later a local, Sumit, also got shot and was shifted to a hospital in Meerut where he succumbed to his injuries. He said the SIT will investigate the entire incident.
