Surendra Kumar Das, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer posted as the Superintendent of Police in Kanpur city is said to be ‘critical’ after he allegedly consumed some poisonous substance on Wednesday.

“On Tuesday night, Das had spoken to circle officers regarding patrolling. At 4 AM Wednesday, his wife, who is a doctor, noticed that his health suddenly deteriorated. He was rushed to a government hospital from where he was shifted to a private nursing home, where his condition is stated to be serious,” ADG Kanpur zone Avinash Chandra told PTI.

The 30-year-old officer was immediately kept on ventilator and is being treated for suspected poisoning.

A senior doctor at the nursing home where the officer is admitted, said, “It is too early to reach any conclusion as to whether Das consumed poison to commit suicide or he took something laced with poisonous substance accidentally.”

The 2014 batch officer had allegedly attempted suicide at his official residence in Kanpur and was found unconscious by his staff on early Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the ADG maintained that the department had nothing to do with the matter as his behaviour till late Tuesday was good and said that the case would be probed.

“He had worked till late in the night on Tuesday. His behaviour was very good. Now, for what reason he had consumed poisonous substance will be probed,” the ADG said.

“It has been decided to question the IPS officer’s wife,” the ADG added.
