At least three people were killed while five others were admitted to hospital after getting stuck in a 130 cubic metre deep sewage treatment plant in the Dhokali area of Thane in Maharashtra. The incident took place late on Thursday night at the Pride Presidency society. A total of eight labourers were involved in the STP cleaning operation in the complex in Kapurbawdi when they got stuck inside the plant, said Santosh Kadam, chief of the Regional Disaster Management Cell of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC). The three hoked to death at around 12.30 am.
The dead have been identified as 20-year-old Amit Puhal, 21-year-old Aman Badal, and 24-year-old Ajay Bumbak. According to news agency ANI, five people were rescued by fire brigade personnel. They were immediately rushed to the Metro hospital in the vicinity.
The Kapurbawdi police have registered a case of accidental death and sent the bodies for a post-mortem examination, civic officials said.
In a similar incident in January, two men, including the in-charge and supervisor of a contractual firm, were arrested for the death of three labourers at a civic sewage treatment plant at Mira Road on Wednesday. The sub-contractor of SPML Infra Ltd, that had bagged the five-year contract, Andwara Pathar, was booked under IPC section 304 (a) for causing death due to negligence.
