In yet another dreadful incident, a part of Rajiv Gandhi bridge on the Bhiwandi Bhiwandi-Kalyan road in Maharashtra's Thane collapsed on Wednesday. However, no casualties have been reported in the incident so far.  "Thane: Portion of Rajiv Gandhi bridge in Bhiwandi collapses. More details awaited. #Maharashtra," according to reports.

The three-km-long flyover, which runs from Rajiv Gandhi Chowk to Saibaba temple and connects the Bhiwandi bypass road with Mumbai-Nashik highway was shut for repairing work. In February, the traffic at the bridge has been stopped after chunks of concrete fell on a four-wheeler that was passing under the bridge. The car was damaged severely, though the driver escaped unhurt into the incident.

However, this is not the first such incident in the history of Maharashtra. In 2016, at least 42 people were killed after a British-era bridge on the Mumbai-Goa highway caved in, sending two buses and other small vehicles plunging into the flooded river near Mahad town, about 170 km from Mumbai.

The incident of Rajiv Gandhi bridge collapse came a day after shock and terror engulfed the arterial Diamond Harbour area of south Kolkata following the Majerhat flyover collapse, which left one dead and several others trapped on late Tuesday evening. At least 27 people lost their lives after the under-construction Vivekananda flyover collapsed in the city on March 31, 2016.

(More Details Awaited)
