In the wake of incessant rains in Mumbai, Maharashtra Education Minister Ashish Shelar declared that all schools and junior colleges in Mumbai, Thane, & Konkan region will remain closed today. According to latest updates, the city recorded over 200 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. It is being reported that low pressure over the Bay of Bengal resulted in torrential showers in the financial capital.
Continuous downpours have caused waterlogging and traffic snarls in Mumbai. The weather department issued ‘red alert’ and has asked the authorities to be prepared to handle any situation. Earlier, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation announced that the schools will remain closed on Wednesday. Low visibility was also reported from areas in and around Eastern Expressway. Similar conditions prevailed in Powai area.
In view of the rainfall, city schools remained closed on Wednesday also.
Mumbai Police issued an advisory on Twitter. “Dear Mumbaikars, The IMD authorities have indicated high rainfall weather for Mumbai and other adjoining districts for the next 2 days. Please take adequate precautions and ensure safety. #Dial100 in case of an emergency. Take care Mumbai,” the tweet said. Last month also saw heavy rainfall in the Maximum City. Maharashtra has witnessed not just heavy rains but floods in several parts in areas such as Kolhapur and Sangli. In July, the Mumbai University had postponed the exam of B.Sc Computer Science for first and second year students due to heavy rains.
