Mumbai: Dogs are turning blue near Taloja Industrial Estate, here is why!

New Delhi:

People in Navi Mumbai have been witnessing something strange since the last couple of days as all the dogs near Taloja Industrial Estate are turning blue and the untreated industrial wastes are considered to be the main reason behind the same.

According to reports, the industrial units around the locale directly release effluents in the Kasadi river in which the dogs often wade for food. As a result of this daily pollution, their skin is turning into a bright shade of blue.

The Navi Mumbai Animal Protection Cell has also filed a complaint with the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) on Thursday and blamed the industrial units around the place. Taloja has more than thousand pharmaceutical, food and engineering factories all over the country.

"A water quality test at Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation found the waste treatment was inadequate. The levels of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) — the concentration of oxygen required to sustain aquatic life — was 80 milligram a litre (mg/L). Levels of chloride, which is toxic, harms vegetation, aquatic life and wildlife, were also high," a report published in 'Hisdustan Times' reads.

"The area is already cordoned off to the public and is in close proximity of the private company. However, five to six dogs entered the site looking for food and got the blue colour on them. We have warned the company owners to ensure no animals can enter again and such an incident should not be repeated, "Jayavant Hajare, sub-regional officer, MPCB Navi Mumbai was quoted while interacting with the leading daily.

Earlier, in 2016 the polluted river water was also affecting the stocks of fish and it might be also harmful to birds, animals and other creatures who might have died due to pollution.
