Ekta Ashubhai Gala, a 25-year-old Jain woman from Mumbai’s Matunga died on Wednesday. She was observing fast for last 8 days as per Jain rituals, reported DNA. She started her fast on August 27 which was to conclude on September 3. According to her death report, she died of a heart attack. Moreover, she had specifically gone to her parents’ house in Gujarat’s Kutch to follow the Jain rituals for observing fast.
After initial five days of following the rituals, her health started deteriorating and she was rushed to a local hospital. She was advised to take a meal per day which she denied, said Ekta’s relative to DNA.
Ekta’s condition deteriorated and was she administered glucose on September 3. However, she wanted to drink only boiled water as per Jain beliefs. Unfortunately, she suffered heart-attack on Wednesday and passed away.
Morever, fasting is common in Jains during the time of festivals. A Jain can fast anytime if he or she feels that an error has been committed. Fasting, as per Jain belief, is a way to maintain self-control. Jain texts suggest that if someone abstains from the pleasure of five senses and dwell in deep concentration, it is termed as fasting.
