Nine killed, several injured as heavy landslides hit Manipur's Tamenglong district

At least nine people, including five children, were killed and several injured as heavy monsoon rain triggered massive landslides at three places in Manipur's Tamenglong town on Wednesday, officials said.

Chief Minister Biren Singh took to Twitter and said that he was deeply saddened by the news. The landslides occurred at three places in the town early morning.

While the injured have been rushed to the district hospital in Tamenglong Headquarters, the bodies of two children are yet to be recovered, Chief Minister N Biren Singh told reporters.

"I am deeply saddened to know that nine precious life lost due to landslide at 3 places in Tamenglong Head Quarter, till now 7 bodies have been recovered, 2 bodies of children yet to be recovered. Rescue operations are on," the chief minister wrote.

District Deputy Commissioner Rabinder Singh told PTI that the bodies of seven of the nine persons missing following the landslides have been recovered.

Meanwhile, security personnel and locals are carrying out rescue operations on a war footing, he said.

Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jitendra Singh condoled the deaths.

"Saddened to learn, 9 precious lives lost due to landslide at 3 places in Tamenglong, #Manipur. Appreciate CM Sh @NBirenSingh taking personal interest in rescue operations," the minister wrote.

Some of the deceased have been identified as Tigailiu Riamei (17), Peichunliu Riamei (15), Gaikurei Riamei (13), Guangthuichui Riamei (12), Pouhuatlung Riamei (9), Meizinlakliu Pamai and Linwangbou, according to an official release.

Several houses in the town have also been destroyed by the landslides, the release stated. And, other villages in the district have also been badly hit by the incessant rain, according to local reports.

Tamenglong district is located west of Manipur and lies about 150 km from Imphal. Every year during the monsoon, heavy rains and massive landslides often throw normal life out of gear.
