Elephant death toll rises to seven

With one more elephant succumbing to injuries, suffered when a speeding train hit a herd of elephants inside Chapramari forest in Jalpaiguri district, the pachyderm death toll rose to seven, Forest department sources said.

On Wednesday a herd of around 40 elephants were crossing the railway tracks inside the Chapramari wildlife sanctuary when the Guwahati-bound passenger train hit them killing six elephants on the spot and one elephant suffered injuries.

The Forest department veterinary doctors were treating the injured elephant at the spot as it was not able to move. Last night the elephant died, the sources said.

On September 22, 2010, a speeding goods train in Dooars had mowed down seven elephants, when they were crossing the railway tracks at Moraghat-Reti elephant corridor near Banarhat railway station in Jalpaiguri district.
