8 children among 9 killed by lightning strike in Bihar's Nawada district

At least 9 people, including 8 children, were killed and several others injured after lightning struck the Dhanpur village in Bihar's Nawada district on Friday afternoon. All of the injured were immediately admitted to a government hospital and are undergoing treatment.

The tragedy took place at Kashi Chowk police station area in Mushahari, earlier today, when a few children were playing in rain outside their home. Soon after the incident, the family members rushed to the spot in a hussle but found some of them dead.

In the wake of this disastrous incident, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has expressed his grief and announced an ex-gratia of 4 lakh each to the kin of the deceased.

Taking to twitter, Shandilya Giriraj Singh, the Member of Parliament from Begusarai and Minister of Animal Husbandry, Dairying, and Fisheries, also condolded the death while praying for a speedy recovery to the wounded.

"The lightning strike in the Dahnpur village of Kashi Chowk block killed 9 members of a Dalit family and injured 13 others. I pray to Mahadev to grant a speedy recovery to the wounded and give strength the families of the deceased," the tweet read.

Lightning is a major cause of storm related deaths, in the middle of summer, across India. According to data released by the National Crime Records Bureau, around 30,000 people lost their lives in the country since 2005, making it an average 2,000 deaths a year. In 2016, 93 people were killed and more than 20 injured by lightning strikes in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh
