A Maoist was killed in an encounter in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh on Wednesday, the police said. The security personnel recovered a huge cache of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) from the encounter spot, they added. The encounter took place around 9 am near the Tarrem village, which is located nearly 450 km from Raipur, Bijapur Superintendent of Police Mohit Garg said.

Acting on a tip-off that a group of 25 to 30 Maoists was trying to damage the Basaguda-Tarrem road by triggering a landmine blast, a joint team of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and local police rushed to the spot, he said. As the security personnel was cordoning off a forest patch near Tarrem, the Maoists fired at them, leading to the gun-battle between the two sides, he said. A Maoist, whose is yet to be identified, was killed and a muzzle loading gun were recovered from the spot, Garg said.

As many as 25 IEDs, Naxal literature and other items were also seized from the site, the Superintendent of Police said.

On November 29, a Maoist was killed on the Dantewada and Sukma border in Chhattisgarh in an encounter with the security forces. On November 26, at least eight Maoists and two police personnel were killed in an encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district, the police had said. The gun battle took place at a forest in Kistaram area bordering Telangana when a team of security personnel was out on an anti-Naxal operation, Sukma’s Superintendent of Police Abhishek Meena had said. Eight bodies of Naxals have been found at the encounter spot, he said. Two District Reserve Guard (DRG) personnel were also killed in the exchange of fire, the SP had said.
