Hyderabad:

Distressed over his failure to crack the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains test, a 17-year-old student allegedly committed suicide in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

The boy, identified as Sahil, allegedly used the pistol of his father, a retired Army jawan, to kill himself at his house in the Neredmet neighbourhood in Secunderabad.

According to news agency IANS, Sahil took coaching at Aakash Institute for the JEE test but failed to qualify. The JEE results were announced on Monday.

Sahil’s father had scolded him for failing the exam and not concentrating on his studies. Sahil is believed to have taken the extreme stop after being depressed over his failure and his father’s scolding.

The police are questioning Sahil's father, Meheruddin, who is currently working as a security guard at a bank.

Police said his father had also scolded him for spending too much time on mobile phone.

JEE is a national level competitive test for admission to various undergraduate engineering and architecture courses in institutes accepting the JEE-Main score, mainly National Institutes of Technology and Indian Institute of Information Technology.

The incident comes amid protests by students and opposition parties over the alleged bungling in the intermediate exam results which were recently announced.

A Congress-led opposition delegation has met Governor E S L Narasimhan and sought a judicial probe into the alleged goof-up.

They have claimed that over 20 students committed suicide since April 18 after announcement of the results.
