New Delhi:
A 52-year-old doctor of a Centre-run hospital allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her government residence in North Avenue area of the national capital. According to a report in Hindustan Times, the doctor left a suicide note in which she accused three colleagues of ‘humiliating and harassing’ her as she was heading an inquiry against them.
The deceased, identified as Poonam Vohra, was a consultant Radiologist at Ram Manohar Lohia hospital. According to reports, the police got information about her suicide at 1 pm after her husband, a consultant with a private firm, returned and found the flat locked from inside. Her two children were also not at home at the time of the incident.
“When he peeped through the window, Vohra found Poonam hanging from the ceiling fan in their bedroom. With the help of neighbours, he broke open the door and brought her down. They called the police and rushed her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead,” a police officer, not authorised to speak to the media, was quoted as saying by the report.
The legal proceeding has been initiated and the post-mortem will be conducted on Thursday, he said.
“There was just one line written in her suicide note — that these three doctors had been humiliating and harassing her. We learnt that she was heading some department inquiry related to misconduct against the three doctors,” the deputy commissioner of police Madhur Verma said.
The police are yet to question the hospital administration and the doctor’s colleagues to find out more about these allegations.
