In what can be called as one of the gruesome cases of domestic violence, a 22-year-old was allegedly tortured by her husband and in-laws and left to die on railway tracks for failing to fulfil their demands for dowry in the Gopalganj district of Bihar. The victim was thrashed by her husband, who with the help of his family used hot iron rods to torture her.

The accused then ripped off her nails, pulled out her hair. When the woman lost consciousness, they threw her on railways tracks. After gaining consciousness, the victim sought help from passers-by who rushed to a nearby hospital in a critical condition.

According to doctors, the woman was grievously wounded and was injured in seven places, and suffered burns in several parts of her body.

The woman said that her husband demanded Rs 2 lakh and a bike as dowry, for which he was pressuring her for a while. When the money was not given to him, he along with his family started to torture the woman.

A case has been registered in the matter. The accused and his family members are on the run.

In a similar case, a 27-year-old woman died allegedly due to starvation at her husband's home in Kerala. Thushara, a native of Karunagapally, died in the hospital on March 21. She weighed 20 kg at the time of her death. A case of dowry death under section 304B of the Indian Penal Code was registered in this regard by Kerala Police. On March 29, the state police, on the basis of the post-mortem report and statements of her relatives, arrested her husband Chandu Lal and her mother-in-law Geetha Lal who were sent to 14 days custody. Her two children were taken to a child protection home.
