Saumya Pushkar, a 30-year-old Civil Police Officer (CPO), was killed after a man set her on fire in Mavelikkara in Kerala’s Alappuzah district on Saturday.

The woman police officer was posted at the Vallikunnam police station near Mavelikkara and was a mother of three children.

According to the media reports, the incident took place while Saumya Pushkar was returning home on a motorcycle when a man in another vehicle dashed her bike. Soumya fell on the road and the accused poured petrol on the victim and set her ablaze. The incident occurred around 3.30 pm.

The assailant, who also got burn injuries, has been arrested by the police soon after the attack.

According to police, the accused, identified as Ajas, a policeman attached to the Aluva traffic station, allegedly followed the woman in a car when she was on her way back home after work in the evening.

"He knocked her two-wheeler down and allegedly hacked her with a sharp weapon and as she tried to seek refuge at a nearby house, chased, poured petrol over her and set her ablaze," the police said.

"She died on the spot while the policeman, who also suffered 40 per cent burns, was taken into custody," a police official told PTI. "The accused has been admitted to the government medical college hospital at Alappuzha and the reason for the attack can be ascertained only after interrogation," he added.

In the meantime, The Hindu quoted Alappuzha District Police Chief K M Tomy saying that a man had been taken into custody in connection with the murder. “We have launched a probe and further details will be revealed later,” he said.
