New Delhi:

Kanishak Kataria and three others from Rajasthan are among the top 10 candidates clearing the civil services examination 2018. While Kataria, a B-Tech from IIT Bombay, topped the examination, Akshat Jain, an engineering graduate from IIT Guwahati, Shreyansh Kumath and Shubham Gupta secured second, fourth and sixth ranks, respectively.

The results of civil services final examination 2018 were announced by the Union Public Service Commission on Friday. Kataria, 26, who belongs to the SC category, qualified the examination with mathematics as his optional subject. He is a B.Tech (Computer Science and Engineering).

"It was my first attempt and I was confident of getting a good rank, but number 1 rank was a big surprise for me. It is a childhood dream come true," he said.

"I never expected to get the first rank. I thank my parents, sister and my girlfriend for the help and moral support. People will expect me to be a good administrator and that's exactly my intention," he said.

Soon after news agency ANI quoted him as saying this, people on Twitter celebrated the fact he publicly thanked his girlfriend.

“Congratulations to Just in: Kanishak Kataria topping the Civil Services examination and Srushti Jayant Deshmukh to be topper among women. Especially glad to see the topper thanking his girlfriend publicly & hopefully will help remove taboos about partners of children,” tweeted Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi.

"How cute!", one Twitter user wrote. "I absolutely love that he said girlfriend. So many years of subtle conditioning shattered in a small little statement," another user wrote.

Here’s how other people reacted on Twitter:

Katarai's father Sanwarmal Verma is also an IAS officer. Kataria, a resident of the city, has earlier worked with a multinational company in South Korea and Bengaluru but resigned in 2017 to prepare for civil services.

He said he took coaching in Delhi and studied 8-10 hours daily and slogged 14-15 hours in the last two months before the examination.

"I worked in private sector. I also got a chance to work with a company in the US. I realised that I was just making money and and not working for my country. So I made a decision to prepare for civil services," he said.
