IITs are likely to introduce choice-based scheme for weak students, which means students can exit early after completing 3 years of their course with B.Sc. Degree. This means that students will now have a choice to whether they want to continue studying four years and get B.Tech. Degree or walk out after completing 3 years of study with B.Sc. degree. However, the final decision is yet to be made on this issue.

The proposal to offer B.Sc. degree to weaker students is likely to be discussed at the council meeting of IIT, however, the final decision is yet to be finalized. Meanwhile, IIT Council is the National Level decision making body for 23 IITs. The IIT council is headed by HRD Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal and is expected to discuss the respective proposal on Friday.

According to the present academic model followed by the IITs, students who are studying at IIT need to pass 8 semesters over a period of 4 years to get the B.Tech. degree. However, if any student leaves the engineering degree course after 3 years, he/she will not be awarded any degree. This may be the reason; the council is likely to introduce a walkout option with 3-year B.Sc. programme.
