Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday sharpened his attack on the Congress saying the grand old part’s ‘ego is too big’. The former chief minister also likened the Congress to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) saying they both do politics of ‘intimidation.’

"We had an alliance with the Congress, but found that their ego is too big," the Samajwadi Party president said.

Congress was kept out of ‘Mahagathbandhan’ or grand alliance comprising of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Samajwadi Party (SP) and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD).

"Like the BJP, the Congress too believes in threatening political opponents," he said at an election meeting in Kanpur.

The SP had an understanding with the grand old party during the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. However, it was kept out of the alliance for the Lok Sabha elections.

The SP and the BSP, which announced their alliance in January, will contest on 37 and 38 seats respectively. The RLD will fight on three seats. The alliance has decided not to field candidates from Rae Bareli and Amethi, the constituencies held by Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
