The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) once again likely to make a big impact in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Gujarat, the party bastion and its president Amit Shah, with Prime Minister emerging as a clear favourite for the second term, according to the News Nation opinion poll. Congress president Rahul Gandhi is nowhere near Modi when it comes to popularity, the polls predicted.

The BJP is expected to continue its dominance in Narendra Modi’s home state in the upcoming elections. However, the seat share may see a downfall as compared to the 2014 Lok Sabha polls when the saffron party had won on all 26 seats. According to the News Nation opinion poll, the BJP is expected to win 21 seats, while the Congress may claim victory on five seats.

According to the poll, 61 per cent of the respondents said they want Modi to continue as the prime minister, while 30 per cent chose the Congress chief over the former.

When asked whether they are satisfied with the government’s performance in terms of controlling inflation rate, 51 per cent of the participants voted in favour of the BJP dispensation, while 43 per cent voted against it.

Further, the youth of the nation seems to be distressed on the issue of job creation as 50 per cent of the respondents said they are not satisfied with the government on the issue, while only 44 per cent voted in favour.

However, 70 per cent participants said they are satisfied with the government’s ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ mission. 24 per cent respondents voted against the flagship programme.

On the ongoing tensions with Pakistan, 60 per cent of the respondents said they are satisfied with the government’s way of handling the issue, while 30 per cent voted against it.

While 46 per cent of the participants said the government has successfully tackled the problem of corruption, 34 per cent said it has failed on the issue.

Among prominent MPs, the party has dropped patriarch L K Advani (91) from the Gandhinagar seat and Union minister Haribhai Chaudhary from Banaskantha.

The BJP has fielded its president Amit Shah from Gandhinagar, a prestigious seat held by Advani since 1991. Shah filed his nomination papers from the Gandhinagar seat last Saturday after taking out a massive rally and road show in the constituency.

The last date of filing nominations for elections in Gujarat is April 4. Polling will be held in Gujarat in a single phase on April 23.

The BJP on Tuesday declared two more candidates for the Lok Sabha elections in Gujarat, taking the total number of its nominees to 25 in the state. In its latest list, the ruling party dropped its current MP from Mehsana, but retained the sitting Lok Sabha member from Surat.

The saffron outfit has dropped its sitting MPs on nine seats and renominated 16 Members of Parliament, who were elected in 2014.

Ahmedabad East is the only Lok Sabha seat, where the party is yet to declare its candidate. Paresh Rawal has decided not to contest polls this time citing his busy acting schedule.
