New Delhi:

In her first ever visit to politically-sensitive Ayodhya, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “I asked people if PM visits villages in Varanasi, I got reply 'he does not visit'. I was surprised because his publicity is such that I thought he must have been doing something. He visited whole world and hugged everyone, but didn't hug his own people,” Priyanka said. The Congress General Secretary also slammed the BJP government for host of issues such as women safety, economic development among others. “NDA government's focus is on making the rich, richer. It has money for businessmen, not the poor,” Priyanka said.

Ayodhya goes to poll on May 6 in the fifth phase of the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. The stakes are high for the Congress as all eyes are on Priyanka and her impact on the party supporters in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh (East) interacted with locals during a 'chaupal' in Kumarganj ahead of her Ayodhya rally. In the temple town, Priyanka raised the MNREGA issue. “The government wants to shut down MGNREGA scheme, workers not paid for six months,” she said.

On Thursday, Priyanka said that her party doesn’t need any certificate on nationalism from those who betrayed the country during the freedom struggle by pleading before the Britishers. Not taking names of any leader of party, Priyanka, while addressing party workers in a closed-door meeting in Rae Bareli, said, “We do not need any certificate from those who worked against the interests of the country during the freedom struggle and wrote to the British government to be freed from jails. We have fought the freedom struggle and are not afraid of them. We are not going to be browbeaten by them.”

Launching a scathing attack on saffron brigade for instigating nationalism and religion to “swing votes” in their favour, the Congress leader said that they were using martyrs for political gains. “Those who are talking about corruption are corrupt themselves, those who are talking of their work have not worked and those who are talking of religion indulge in irreligious acts. They are using martyrs for political purposes,” The Hindustan Times quoted Priyanka as saying.

The politically-sensitive state which sends 80 members to the Lok Sabha – will go to polls in seven phases starting April 11, the Election Commission announced on Sunday. Voting in Uttar Pradesh will be held on April 11, April 18, April 23, April 29, May 6, May 12 and May 19. The counting of votes will take place on May 23.

When it comes to vote-sharing, the News Nation opinion poll predicts that the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ (grand alliance) could again do better than the BJP-AD alliance. While the parties of Akhilesh Yadav, Mayawati and Jayant Sinha may win 39 per cent of the votes, Amit Shah-Anupriya Patel alliance may end up with 36 per cent of the total votes. Whereas the Congress may bag only 13 per cent.
