The counting of votes polled in 38 parliamentary seats in Tamil Nadu and 1 Lok Sabha seat of Puducherry will take place on Thursday amid tight security. Over 800 candidates are testing their fortunes from the 38 Lok Sabha seats.

The politics of this state has by and large been centered around two regional parties, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Both the parties claim to profess ideologies inspired by the Dravidian movement. While the Congress tied up with DMK and other smaller parties, while BJP joined hands with the AIADMK - which split into two after Jayalalithaa's death - and other state-level parties.

As per procedure, postal ballots will be counted first. The exercise of counting postal ballots will itself take a couple of hours at least. After that counting, EVMs will begin. The paper trail machines slip will be counted in the end. In case of a mismatch, the results based on paper slip count will be considered as final.
