New Delhi:

The Election Commission of India on May 23 will announce the results of Lok Sabha Elections 2019, which were held in seven phases from April 11 to May 19. In Rajasthan, the elections for state's 25 parliamentary constituencies were held in two phases - on April 29 and May 6. As far as Assembly polls are concerned, Rajasthan has a tradition of voting the incumbent out. But in Lok Sabha elections, the state throws unpredictable mandate. In this article, we are trying to understand how Lok Sabha elections in Rajasthan played out for the BJP and the Congress.

2014 Lok Sabha Elections: This was the year when the so called Narendra Modi "wave" swept the elections and the Congress party as well. Like the rest of the country, the "wave" was visible in Rajasthan as well and the state blessed the BJP with all the seats it sends to the Lok Sabha. The BJP, which was then ruling the state under Vasundhara Raje's leadership, won all the 25 seats. The Congress party, which had bagged 20 of the total seats reduced to zero. The mandate was loud and clear.

2009 Lok Sabha elections: In 2009, the Congress was fighting the anti-incumbency of five years. The country was feeling under the effect of 2008 economic crisis, which brought the GDP on its knees. However, Rajasthan, where the Congress party had dethroned the Vasundhara Raje government a year ago favoured the ruling party. Congress won 20 of the total 25 seats and the BJP was reduced to just 4 seats. One seat was won by an independent candidate. Thanks to the desert state, the Congress-led UPA coalition returned to power.

2004 Lok Sabha elections: This was the year when India Shining happened with the BJP. But unlike rest of the country, Rajasthan was kinder to the BJP which was seeking re-election under Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The saffron party had won 21 of the total seats and the Congress party could manage to garner only four seats. However, the overall results went against the BJP, defying all the exit polls that predicted return of the Vajpayee government. The Congress party formed the government in alliance with other regional parties.

1999 Lok Sabha elections: In 1999, elections were forced on people of the country after the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government collopsed after it failed to prove majority by one vote. The elections were held few months after the bloody Kargil war and the BJP was hoping to return to power, riding a sympathy wave after the shocking fall of its government. In Rajasthan, the saffron party won 16 seats against the nine seats of the Congress. Vajpayee formed the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government with the outside support of the Telugu Desam Party which was not strictly part of its coalition.
